Chapter 8

The chance to touch Taylor without any of the barriers they’d both erected had been heaven, and completely idiotic. Hadn’t he learned anything from the past? He needed to keep his hands to himself.

Mae pretended she had no idea what they’d been up to when they walked in the back door. “I hope you had a restful nap. Go. Sit.”

“Can I help?” he and Taylor asked at the same time.

Mae laughed, waving them away. “Nope.”

They took the same seats they’d occupied when they arrived. The table was filled with different sizes and shapes of candles, some burning blue and green and others emitting little colored sparks at the end of the flame.

“Mae makes them. She won’t teach me how,” Taylor said as if reading his mind.

“We each have our gifts, child. Yours is those glass creations you make. I’d cut myself to ribbons and you’d burn all the skin off your hands. We’re each well suited to our tasks. You know this.” Mae passed Ben a bowl of grilled shrimp.

Thick, crusty bread with real butter was set on the table, along with a bottle of wine. The food was incredible and so was the company. Mae told stories from Taylor’s childhood, embarrassing Taylor and entertaining Ben. Before he was ready, the meal was over and Mae blew the candles out in one breath.

“Go. Start picking your items. You know what to do.” Mae patted Taylor’s shoulder before turning to him. “You and I are going to wash dishes.”

“Yes, ma’am.” He didn’t mind. Taylor shot him an apologetic glance, but he shook his head as he gathered dishes from the table.

“Thank you for helping. And without complaint, too. Taylor’s lucky to have you.” Mae nudged him as she took over rinsing the dishes.

“Why couldn’t Taylor’s mother leave the book here under your protection?”

“I offered, but she said the evil the book draws would eventually corrupt my sanctuary. She didn’t want that.” Mae sighed. “You’re a good man. I wish I could tell you everything is going to end well, but there are too many factors.”

“Well, that sucks.” He pulled the plug in the sink, rinsing the suds down and trying to hold onto his hope they’d come out of this alive.

“I know. It does suck, doesn’t it?” Mae patted his arm with her tiny wet hand. “All I know for certain is you and Taylor must stick together. There is great power between you. And strength. To stop this thing you will have to stay united and focused.”

“That’s better than nothing.”

“And harder than you think for my niece. She doesn’t trust easily. Her hurt is strong and will take time to heal. James was terrible to her. I know she doesn’t act it, but he almost totally destroyed her self-esteem. Well, he did for a long time. She questions every look from you, every action that makes her feel like a desirable woman. She doesn’t believe you could really want her.” Mae kept her voice low, glancing over her shoulder as if she was telling him something he hadn’t already figured out.
